Essential fatty acids (again!)
We love them, we talk about them a lot, they are ESSENTIAL.
But why do we love these fats so much?
Essential fatty acids ARE NOT metabolised by the body & the only source for skin is via diet or supplementing. A deficiency in them results in a compromised cell membrane.
Why is a compromised cell membrane a big problem?
The cell membrane acts as the gatekeeper of the cell, retaining the cytoplasm-a fluid that maintains the skin's softness, dewyness, and flexibility-inside. It regulates what enters and exits the cell, ensuring that harmful bacteria and pathogens are kept out.
If we aren't getting the correct ratio of essential fatty acids, and our cell membranes become compromised, this impacts our hormones. As strong membranes are crucial for hormones to dock onto receptors and send messages properly.
It also affects our skin barrier defence, as around 85% of the lipids (oils) in our acid mantle (skin barrier) are essential fatty acids released from the keratinocyte cell nembranes, with the remaining 15% coming from sweat gland secretions.
This can manifest as eczema, acne, dermatitis, lipid dryness, scaly skin, sallow tired skin, soft nails, dry scalp, falling hair, and barrier defence conditions. At Sage Skin we stock Bare Biology Omega-3, which has on average double the amount of high quality omega-3 compared to well known brands, so you see faster results & more value for money.
