Don’t mistake perioral dermatitis for acne

Perioral dermatitis presents as red, inflamed skin that may burn or itch around the mouth area.

This area of the face has a higher quantity of mast cells (immune cells), making it more susceptible to immune responses. Factors such as stress, gut issues, poor diet, and inadequate skincare can trigger these immune responses, which can disrupt the skin’s acid mantle (skin barrier).

Clients often mistake this skin condition for acne, as it can present with clusters of small papules and occasionally, tiny pustules.

Treating perioral dermatitis (PD) as acne with salicylic acid, retinoids, vitamin A, etc., can exacerbate the condition by overstimulating the area. The “less is more” approach is especially important with PD. However, an individualised approach remains crucial, as some dermatitis can be more wet than dry and flaky.

Did you know negative self talk and thoughts can suppress the immune system and cause an inflammatory response in the skin?
