Why we need progesterone
WHAT IS IT?
Progesterone is a happy hormone that plays a key role in the body, especially in the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. It helps prepare the lining of the uterus for a possible pregnancy and supports early stages of pregnancy if it occurs
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Calming effects on the brain
Improves mood
Maintains a healthy pregnancy
Increases sleepiness
Reduces anxiety
Builds and maintains bones
Protects breasts and uterus against cancer
Supports appetite
Reduces inflammation
Has a calming effect on the nervous system, and makes it easier to cope with stress
Helps control the menstrual cycle by balancing estrogen levels, which can reduce symptoms like heavy bleeding or irregular periods
Can help promote a sense of calm and well-being by binding to GABA receptors, which are the same receptors that anti-anxiety medications target
SOUNDS AMAZING, WHY WOULDN’T I HAVE IT?
The ovaries only produce progesterone after ovulation. The purpose of hormonal contraception is to SUPPRESS ovulation. Without ovulation, you cannot make progesterone. This can also apply to individuals not on hormonal birth control, many women have low progesterone and are not ovulating at all. This can look like anxiousness, struggling to sleep, irritability, or crying before your period.
Tracking ovulation and educating yourself about your body is the most empowering thing you can do as a woman.
